General informations
DiGiDi is a global co-operative society, established and based in Copenhagen – Denmark in 2003. It is currently owned by close to 500 musicians and other artists who each hold an equal share in the society.
DiGiDi is a Non Profit society that, over the last three years, successfully has established a global digital distribution net, through which share holders can sell their music in more than 60 online shops all over the world, including some 25 iTunes shops.
Why Ghana ?
Distribution is the biggest expense for the entertainment industry in Ghana, since the mass production and global distribution of physical CDs and DVDs is an expensive affair which requires substantial investment beforehand.
By instead distributing music through the Internet a Ghanaian musician or record company receives up to 80 % of the income from the sale, since there are no unnecessary intermediate stages between musician and consumer.
More than 40 record companies have already chosen to distribute digitally through DiGiDi, which now offers this opportunity for cheap global distribution to Ghanaian musicians and record companies.
The price of a share in DiGiDi, which may be owned by an individual artist or a group, is 100.000 cedi in Ghana. ($11.75) This is ONE DAY SALLERY . . the global value of a share in DiGiDi.
The price for a share in other currencies is DKK 1000 $166, €132, £89.
As of now, the actual sale of music for downloading in Ghana will be limited, since the penetration of computers with Internet access is still relatively low, but immediate access to the global marked provides new opportunities for local musicians, and even though a piece of music is sold only in few copies it will grant the musician a considerable income.
A monthly salary in Ghana is about $200 and if that income is to be achieved through online sale alone, a total of only 28 albums must be sold globally, which is a very realistic goal, even for unknown artists. The promotion of Ghanaian music remains a challenge, but also here DiGiDi’s international network and experience with Internet activities will benefit the Ghanaian music industry.

To get established in Ghana, DiGiDi have set up a shop/café on a central location in Accra. (Osu)
Here musicians will be able to gain information on the principles behind DiGiDi, upload their music and so on. Furthermore, DiGiDi will establish a network of Ghanaian musicians and record companies, a process which has already begun.
